Just looking at standard e cigs today, you might not think that they have such a rich and extensive history. Composed of a cartridge and powerful lithium ion battery, current e cigs appear sleek and modern. But few would guess that this seemingly contemporary invention actually dates back to the 1960s.
You may vape with e cigs on a daily basis, but to truly appreciate them, you should know a little about their past. Learn more about how e cigs have changed in the last 50 years and how they were developed to become the compact, satisfying product you know today.
The Beginning of E Cigs
In 1963, Herbert A. Gilbert of Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, filed a patent for an electronic cigarette prototype. Although his design was never actually put into production, it still laid the groundwork for e cigs today. Operated by a battery-powered heat source, much like modern e cigs, Gilbert’s device heated a solution to produce flavored water vapor.
Development and Production
Over the years, e cigs were developed, designed, and refined by other manufacturers. In China, for example, an innovative pharmacist by the name of Hon Lik invented a nicotine based electronic cigarette in 2003. After a few more years of trial and error research, Lik then released an e cig that consisted of a battery and atomizer coil—just in time for e cigs to really take off and gain widespread international popularity.
In only 50 years, e cigs have advanced dramatically. Once a simple prototype based in Pennsylvania, today’s e cigs can now be customized to suit each vaper’s needs. Consisting of a cartridge, battery, and atomizer coil, e cigs also include a wide variety of options for flavors and nicotine levels. When you choose Mistic e cigs, for example, you can enjoy a taste of either Traditional (tobacco) or cool Menthol, as well as nicotine levels in 1.8% and 2.4% for a richer, bolder experience.
Some people see e cigs as just another fad, but at Mistic, we know that they have a legacy that’s long-lasting. That’s why our high quality products are made to stand the test of time.
