Given their popularity and widespread availability, it’s easy to assume that electronic cigarettes are a recent trend. With long-lasting batteries and built-in atomizer coils, they truly seem like the products of cutting-edge technology. But you might be surprised to learn that e cigs actually aren’t new at all. In fact, contrary to poplar belief, they have a rich and extensive history that dates back to the early 1960s.
The Earliest E Cigs
Considered by many to be the founder of e cigs, Herbert Gilbert of Beaver Falls, PA, patented the first electronic cigarette prototype in 1963. Although his design was never put into production, it still laid the groundwork for the e cigs we have today. With a battery-powered heat source and various flavors of water to create steam, Gilbert’s model inspired other manufacturers to eventually develop their own products.
The First Generation
Despite Gilbert’s early efforts, the first generation of electronic cigarettes weren’t produced until 2003. At that time, Chinese pharmacist Han Lik developed what we now recognize as modern e cigs and was soon backed by the company, Golden Dragon Holdings. After commercializing Lik’s e cigs, the company celebrated their success by changing their name to Ruyan, which translates to the phrase, “like smoke.”
Introducing E Cigs to the US
Contemporary e cigs were finally introduced to the US in 2007 and have since been received enthusiastically by consumers. In the last 5 years alone, they’ve advanced dramatically in design. And with a variety of e juice flavors to choose from, e cigs boast smoother tastes and fuller, thicker vapes. Today, they’re even sold in major retail stores across the country, like Walmart, Circle K, Bi-Lo and Winn Dixie.
Although small in size, e cigs have a legacy that's not going away any time soon. For more information about Mistic electronic cigarettes, browse through our website and blog, or visit our online store. You can also find retail locations using our store locator.
