Going into the weekend at The Dirt Track at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Nelson Piquet, Jr. was leading the Red Bull Global Rallycross championship by 35 points.
The SHRacing Haus Personal Vaporizer by Mistic team was stoked to be in Piquet’s hometown of Charlotte, NC for this round of the season.
Practice and Qualifying
The round started off on a great note with Piquet finishing up practice in the second spot. He came within just six hundredths of a second of the top spot for the session, held by Scott Speed, who was also ranked 2nd in the championship.
The No. 7 car was poised to reclaim the top spot during qualifying. While the Haus by Mistic car had a strong showing, it was not enough to take the number one spot from Ken Block, and the Piquet claimed 2nd yet again for the team.
The Heat Races
Once the previous sessions were completed, it was time for the heats. Piquet struggled through the heat races, finishing second in the first heat, followed by a fourth in his second race, and a fifth-place finish in the final heat race.
As a result of this, the team was forced into the Last Chance Qualifier (LCQ) to qualify for the final.
Passing four cars and winning the LCQ by one second, Piquet made it into the finals.
The Final Race
Starting the final in the third row on the grid in the 7th position, Piquet was determined to maintain his championship points lead.
He powered his way through the field, and again passed four cars to come to a final position of 3rd behind Ken Block in 1st and Sverre Isachsen in 2nd.
This finish added 11 points to the team's lead, and marks Piquet’s fourth consecutive podium for the season.
Going into the next round of the Red Bull Global Rallycross championship, Piquet and the No. 7 SHRally Ford Fiesta ST have a 46-point lead in the championship points race.
The next round takes place on August 23rd at Daytona International Raceway in Daytona Beach, Florida.
